Safer Spaces Policy

Malmö’s AnarchoQueer Festival is an autonomous event, which means that it is up to us to make rational, informed and un-coerced decisions. We are all responsible for creating a space we desire by educating ourselves, each other and ensuring that we are in dialogue. The dynamics of hierarchy, power and privilege that exist within society are also found within our movement. Failing to address these dynamics alienates and further victimizes our friends and allies and stops us from creating the equitable world we want.

Oppressive behavior occurs everyday and often in seemingly trivial ways. For example, interruptions, jokes, and oppressive language are common behaviors that reinforce power dynamics. People participating in Malmö’s AnarchoQueer Festival are asked to be aware of their language and behavior, and to think about whether it might be oppressive to others. We define oppressive behavior as any conduct that demeans, marginalizes, rejects, threatens or harms anyone on the basis of ability, activist experience, age, cultural background, education, ethnicity, immigration status, language, nationality, physical appearance, race, religion, self-expression, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, status as a parent, species or other such factors. The festival is NOT a space for violence, racism, ageism, classism, transphobia, homophobia, sizeism, sleaziness or touching another person without consent. Acting in a way that perpetuates oppression, including through language, will not be accepted.

It is with the goal of stopping oppressive behavior that we have a AnarchoQueer Safer Spaces Group. They will be available during the festival as a support group for dealing with difficult situations relating to our safer spaces policy. We will also be providing a quiet room, vegan food (free from animal products), wheelchair access.

Drugs (including alcohol) are not allowed at all at Garaget. Alcohol will be for sale on Friday but if you become violent or disrespectful when influenced by drugs we encourage you to avoid them, or you will be kicked out.

Language: We propose that we during the festival use english as the primary language for communication. However if someone feels more comfortable in expressing themselves in another language, we should respect this, and help each other out with translation so that everyone can participate. Also, if you’re facilitating a workshop and want to use another language than english, please ask participants to help you out.

Please keep the following in mind while interacting with others:

• Respect everyone’s physical and emotional boundaries. Ask first before touching, and listen and change your behavior if someone tells you that you are making them uncomfortable.

• Check in before discussing topics that might be triggering (e.g. sexual abuse, sexual experiences, physical violence, or encounters with the police).

• Be responsible for your actions. Be aware that your actions have an effect on others despite what your intentions may be.

• If you are called out for problematic behavior, do not be defensive (for example by explaining your intentions – you will probably make it worse). Your intentions and character are not under attack, it is your behavior that is being challenged. Be open to understanding the role that your behavior has in other people’s experience of oppression.

• Respect the pronouns and names of everyone. Do not assume anyone’s gender identity, sexual preference, survivor status, economic status, background, health etc.

• Respect people’s opinions, beliefs, experiences and differing points of views.

• We cannot guarantee a snitch-free or cop-free space. It is therefore not a safe place to discuss your own or others’ illegal activities.

• Be mindful of the presence of children. Try not to leave anything around that could endanger them or other adults.

• Persons attending the festival do not have to defend themselves or identities. We deal with this bullshit everyday; if we say we don’t want to talk about it, respect that. Offensive or aggressive behavior will not be tolerated.

If you are a cop or a training to be a cop you are not welcome at the festival. We are trying to create a safe and open environment. We believe that the police, prisons, and the (in)justice system act as institutions of social control and oppression further targeting marginalized communities as a result of patriarchy, racism, homophobia, transphobia, classism and ableism.

Malmös AnarchoQueer Festival är ett autonomt evenemang, vilket innebär att det är upp till oss att göra rationella, välgrundade och icke framtvingade beslut. Vi är alla ansvariga för att skapa ett önskvärt rum (space) genom att utbilda oss själva, varandra och se till att vi för en dialog. Dynamiken i hierarkier, makt och privilegier som finns i samhället finns också inom vår rörelse. Att misslyckas med att ta itu med denna dynamik alienerar och ytterligare diskriminerar våra vänner och allierade, och hindrar oss från att skapa den rättvisa värld vi vill ha.

Förtryckande beteende inträffar varje dag och ofta i till synes triviala sätt. Till exempel, avbryta andra, skämt och förtryckande språk är vanliga beteenden som förstärker maktdynamik. Människor som deltar i Malmös AnarchoQueer Festival ombeds att vara medvetna om sitt språk och beteende, och fundera på om det kan vara förtryckande för andra. Vi definierar förtryckande beteenden som något som förnedrar, marginaliserar, avvisar, hotar eller skadar någon grundat på förmåga, erfarenhet av aktivism, ålder, kulturell bakgrund, utbildning, etnicitet, immigrationsstatus, språk, nationalitet, utseende, ras, religion, personligt uttryck, sexuell läggning, könsidentitet, könsuttryck, status som förälder, art eller andra sådana faktorer. Festivalen är inte en plats för våld, rasism, åldersdiskriminering, klassförtryck, transfobi, homofobi, kroppsförtryck, sexuella trakasserier eller att vidröra en annan person utan samtycke. Agerande på ett sätt som vidmakthåller förtryck, bland annat genom språk, kommer inte att accepteras.

Med målet att stoppa förtryckande beteende kommer det finnas en AnarchoQueer Safer Spaces-grupp. De kommer att finnas tillgängliga under festivalen som en stödgrupp för att hantera svåra situationer som rör vår Safer Space-policy. Det kommer också finnas tillgång till ett vilorum, vegansk mat (fri från animaliska produkter) och tillgång till lokalerna för rullstolsburna.

Droger (inklusive alkohol) är inte tillåtna alls på Garaget. Alkohol kommer finnas att köpa på fredagen, men om du blir våldsam eller respektlös under påverkan av droger uppmuntrar vi dig att undvika dem, annars sparkas du ut.

Språk: Vi föreslår att vi under festivalen använder engelska som primärt språk för kommunikation. Men om någon känner sig mer bekväm i att uttrycka sig på ett annat språk, bör vi respektera detta, och hjälpa varandra med översättning, så att alla kan delta. Om du håller i en workshop och vill använda ett annat språk än engelska, vänligen be deltagarna att hjälpa dig.

Vänligen håll följande i åtanke när du interagerar med andra:

• Respektera allas fysiska och känslomässiga gränser. Fråga först innan du rör vid någon annan, och lyssna och förändra ditt beteende om någon säger att du gör dem obekväma.

• Lyssna till hur andra känner inför diskussion av ämnen som kan uppfattas som triggande (t.ex. sexuella övergrepp, sexuella erfarenheter, fysiskt våld, eller konflikter med polisen).

• Var ansvarig för dina handlingar. Var medveten om att dina handlingar påverkar andra oberoende av dina intentioner.

• Om du anklagas för problematiskt beteende, var inte defensiv (till exempel genom att förklara dina avsikter – du kommer förmodligen att göra det värre). Dina intentioner och karaktär attackeras inte, det är ditt beteende som ifrågasätts. Var öppen för att förstå den roll som ditt beteende har i andra människors erfarenheter av förtryck.

• Respektera pronomen och namn på alla. Förutsätt inte någons könsidentitet, sexuell läggning, status som överlevare, ekonomisk status, bakgrund, hälsa mm.

• Respektera andras åsikter, övertygelser, erfarenheter och olika perspektiv.

• Vi kan inte garantera en spionfri eller polisfri zon. Det är alltså inte en säker plats att diskutera dina egna eller andras olagliga aktiviteter.

• Var uppmärksam på närvaron av barn. Försök att inte lämna något runt som kan skada dem eller andra vuxna.

• Personer som deltar i festivalen ska inte behöva försvara sig eller identiteter. Vi erfar denna djävulskap till vardags; om vi säger att vi inte vill prata om det, respektera det. Kränkande eller aggressivt beteende tolereras inte.

Om du är en polis eller utbildar dig till polis är du inte välkommen på festivalen. Vi försöker att skapa en trygg och öppen miljö. Vi anser att polisen, fängelser och (o-)rättssystemet fungerar som institutioner för social kontroll och förtryck som ytterligare marginaliserar grupper som ett resultat av patriarkatet, rasism, homofobi, transfobi, klassförtryck och funktionsförtryck.

Suppression Techniques Workshop – suppression techniques are often used in discussions, debates, or even just talks. It can be in a political context or everyday life, they can be found in expressions, formulations, body language and much more, and are seen to hinder a constructive discussion, mediation or conversation. As such suppression technique is thus a tool for exercising power over someone else. In the workshop we thus want to reflect and discuss how some of these suppression techniques have come across in a queer context based on the experiences of the workshop participants – and how this affects us in everyday life, queer environments, groups, etc.

Crafts Workshop – Space to make banners, furious embroidery, (maybe some vegan whips) and other crafts! Some machines, materials and tools will be disposable but feel free to bring sheets, your knitting and such armoury.

Open Workshop Space – we will provide a meeting space for people attending the festival to organize their own workshops. Workshop ideas can be presented on a (large) piece of paper, with the option of people ‘attending’ the workshop (think facebook). Due to limited space at the venue, only the workshop with the most amount of people ‘attending’ will get the meeting space.  Other workshops may have the opportunity to meet outside depending on the weather.

Anarcho-Queer Workshop – what does anarcho-queer mean to you? This workshop will be an opportunity to discuss how we want to organize from an anarcho-queer perspective and potentially also voice our criticisms and concerns with mainstream ‘queer’ trends and organizing.

Short Film Screening – These are the movies that will be shown tonight at the Short Film Screening, at 21:45 until 23.00. Most of the films are in swedish without subtitles – sorry about that!

Workshop/Group Discussion about Trans Organizing in Malmö – Group discussion about trans-awareness and organizing in Malmö. We would also like to talk about the current exclusion of trans-people in Malmö, particularly within the activist scene. Everyone is encouraged to participate!!

Intersex Politic and Non-Binary Trans Talk – What is intersex? Ellie Nordfelt talks about intersex, sex, gender and anatomy from a queer feminist perspective. Can intersex break the idea of biological sex? How can intersex-activism be a part of a queer and trans movement?

Music Video Night– Music videos & dancing (or relaxing in a sofa). Bring your dance moves. It will be epic.

Statement

Malmö’s Anarcho-Queer Festival – June 26th to June 29th 2013 – is a DIT (Do It Together) event where we can discuss, organize and form links between social justice movements, queer communities and radical visions of pride (reference to pride festivals/regnbagfestivalen). Our intention is to be an anti-oppressive forum that welcomes queer, two spirited*, transgender, transsexual, intersex, genderqueer people and their allies.

The initiators believe that this is an important alternative forum to Regnbagfestivalen because:
1. We believe in autonomous organizing.
2. We refuse to cooperate with authorities (e.g. police, migration officers or politicians (in name of any party)– you are not welcome here).
3. We won’t ignore other forms of oppression such as racism, ableism, classism or apartheid regimes.
4. We want to smash gender binary, designations and assumptions/perceptions of ones gender are not ok.
5. We won’t cooperate with corporate/conformist versions of queerness that devalue our realities.
6. We want to provide a space for community organizing and action.

*two spirited – indigenous North Americans who do not conform to binary gender norms.

I slutet av juni anordnas Anarchoqueerfestivalen 2013 i Malmö som Do.It.Together-festival och komplement till Regnbågsfestivalen. Det kommer vara ett politiskt queeranarkafeministiskt forum där det kan föras samtal och diskussioner, pysslas och spelas musik. Vad vill ni göra?

Queeranarkafeminism är en riktlinje för festivalens politik Anarkistisk QueerFeminism, det finns ingen absolut definition i nuläget. Det är ingen som har tolkningsföreträde och det kan självklart tolkas på många sätt. Skaparna för detta event är enbart informatörer, de kommer inte säga vad som är rätt eller fel, vi skapar festivalen tillsammans, känner du att det är en sorts politik som du är intresserad av eller står för, kom! Det finns utrymme för att filosofera tillsammans vad dessa begrepp egentligen står för, det är bara att styra upp en punkt!

DIT betyder att vi skapar festivalen tillsammans, det finns inga enskilda organisatörer utan bara initiativtagare. Festival in Malmö 26-29 June (english)

In the end of June an anarchistqueerfestival is arranged in Malmö as a Do.It.Together-festival and a complement to the Rainbowfestival that takes place at the same time. It is going to be a political queeranarchofeminist forum where you can discuss, talk, arrange workshops, play music, anything! What do you want to do?
Together we’ll make this an awesome festival!

“Anarchist” – like flat power structure and no hierarchies.

“Queerfeminist” – like feminism beyond the gender binary and heterosexual normativity.

Queeranarchofeminism is a guideline to this specific festivals politics anarchistic queerfemnism, there isn’t any definition at this point. No one has interpretation primacy, and that can definately be interpreted in many different ways!

The people who took initiative to this festival is just giving out information, they won’t say what’s right or wrong. We create this together. Do you feel it’s the sort of politics you are interested in knowing more about and/or supports? Join us! It is possible to philosophize together about what these concepts stands for, just arrange something!
